Governor hopeful Xavier Becerra’s California housing pitch: Build more, promise less
Democrat gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra reiterated his support for Proposition 1, a $11.25 billion housing bond, during a campaign stop in Long Beach.
He argued Prop. 1 would help developers build a 39-unit affordable development in Long Beach, and noted the presence of a church across the street.
“If we need to, we’ll walk right across the street and say a little prayer to make sure it happens,” Becerra said, according to video captured by C-SPAN. “But what we need are the voters to come through.”

CA mayors urge voters to approve $11 billion housing bond, Prop 1
A bipartisan coalition of mayors from California’s largest cities gathered at the state Capitol Wednesday to urge voters to approve Proposition 1, an $11.25 billion bond measure they said would help address the state’s housing affordability and homelessness crises.
The Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act of 2026, which will appear on the November ballot, would authorize $10 billion in bonds for affordable housing and homeownership programs and another $1.25 billion for the CalVet Home Loan Program for eligible veterans.
